Before 1545
|
Before 1545, the world was chaos, and
Ser Maphio said, 'let there be a contract'.
There were certainly professional comic actors and troupes
before this 1545, but they seem to have been restircted
to doing plays only during the brief carnival period each
year. Other activities anticipating CdA would have been
Buffoni acts of one to a small number of actors attracting
an audience to a pitchman. These seem to have typically
been Magnifico and his servant Zan, or Capitano and his
servant Zan. Specifically, Zuan Polo (d. 1541) played
many roles, especially a Croatian charlatan-dottore, Ruzante
(d. 1542) was a Zanni, and Calmo (d. 1571) was a Magnifico,
each in his own semi-professional troupe.
