Zanni [Johnny] was the name for the servants. Historically this included many different types of character: sometimes clever, sometimes not, sometimes energetic, sometimes slow, sometimes superstitious, sometime firmly planted in reality, sometimes jovial, sometimes glum, usually hungry. There were so many Zanni's that it is hard to say something definitive about them all.
